From Tihar Jail to New Party: Kavitha’s Dramatic Political Comeback

Comments

In one of the most dramatic turnarounds in Telangana politics, Kalvakuntla Kavitha launched her new political party Telangana Rashtra Sena (TRS) and declared her ambition to become Chief Minister a remarkable comeback for a leader who, not long ago, was in Tihar Jail facing the Delhi Excise case.

Once branded by critics as the face of the liquor scam, Kavitha has used her acquittal to recast herself as a political survivor. Declaring the case politically motivated, she said truth had prevailed and vowed to convert personal adversity into political momentum.

Kavitha spent months in custody before courts questioned the evidence against her, eventually leading to her acquittal along with other accused in the Delhi Excise Policy case. Her “Satyameva Jayate” post after the verdict became symbolic of what supporters call her political rebirth.

In perhaps the most striking dimension of her comeback, Kavitha’s return comes after her expulsion from BRS, triggering an open political break with her father KCR and party leadership.

At her launch speech, she appeared to take indirect aim at KCR and KTR, saying Telangana’s original movement ideals had been weakened by power politics and needed restoration.

In a move loaded with symbolism, Kavitha named her new party Telangana Rashtra Sena (TRS) — reviving the historic TRS identity associated with the Telangana movement and delivering what many see as a direct political challenge to KCR.

Though Election Commission approval for the name is still awaited, the political message was unmistakable.

Kavitha also attacked Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, accusing the Congress government of failing on jobs, farmers and governance promises, and positioning herself as an alternative to both Congress and BRS.

The defining moment came when Kavitha openly declared she was in the race for the top post.

“I am here not merely to participate in politics, but to lead Telangana,” she said, making her Chief Ministerial ambitions explicit.

With Congress in power and BRS in opposition, Kavitha is betting on political dissatisfaction, Telangana identity and her own comeback story to build a third force.

From jail, acquittal and family rupture to launching a new party under the TRS banner, Kavitha has turned personal crisis into political rebellion and Telangana is now watching whether that rebellion can become a movement.

Her organisation skill are key. Many are saying she will merge like Sharmila. But I have different view.
